A Fresh Approach To Bridal Style

Well hello my lovelies!  Its sooo good to see you again!

To be honest with you – It feels quite strange at this moment in time to be talking about wedding dress trends 2021,  especially as we are coming out of lock down into what feels like quite an unknown era; where many answers are needed to the zillions of questions that we all have.  It feels almost as though we are having multiple conversations about the same topic, yet from multiple perspectives.

.

As a wedding dress designer, my head is sitting in the space between late October and January.  The space where brides are eager to find out what Wedding Dress Trends 2021 and beyond will look like.  But right at this moment, to address the topic of ‘what dresses will be in fashion next season?’ feels a little detached, surreal and distant.  Do you feel the same too?  The feeling that I get as I look around the bridal fashion space too, is that  the changing landscape coupled with the heightened awareness of couples, will have a major impact upon their priorities and values, the subsequent decisions they will make for their grand wedding day when it finally arrives.

.

In many ways, my heart is poured out and finding it hard to submit to the impactful and difficult decisions that couples  moving forward with their wedding day are having to deal with.  Some may embrace the idea of a small and intimate wedding day, whilst others will wait to have a ‘Go big or Go Home’ wedding with no apology!  One thing is for sure, and that is they will have had plenty of time to think about how they wish to spend the most important day of their lives.  And, reconnecting with loved ones and close friends will pay a significant role as part of a wedding day experience that is meaningful in every way possible.

.

The time that we have all spent in our homes separated from those we love has taught us how valuable our loved ones are, and this will impact and change the way in which they have previously allocated funds to look with fresh eyes at every aspect of how they spend their budget with a focus on quality time and the guest experience.

RENEWED DESIRE FOR LUXURY QUALITY PRODUCTS

.

There has never been a time where couples have gained so much insight into the industry and armed with this information, are re-evaluating and embracing the opportunity to support the economy at home rather than purchase from abroad or big corporate brands.

.

Sourcing products that are local from British brands will be top of the agenda for many couples and especially for brides, who are asking the deeper questions about how their dresses get made and how companies treat their staff behind the scenes.  prioritising how ethical and sustainable their wedding dress designer’s practices are – and will therefore demand better.

.

The time spent at home will see many brides keen to go shopping once again for the engagement and luxury of visiting a bridal boutique to see and feel their chosen dress up close and personal.

.

.

Wedding planners and stylists are adapting and embracing the idea of the micro wedding with several really great articles and tips bursting with ideas full of personal expression in a meaningful way.  The current thinking around micro-wedding altogether cancels the idea of micro been anything but tiny, stripped back and bare.  But by contrast, what we are seeing is an opportunity like never before for couples to invest in experiences that may otherwise have stretched the purse strings.  Micro-weddings will also resonate in an impactful and meaningful way with brides-to-be and play a big part in her choice of style and design of the wedding dress.

WEDDING DRESS TRENDS 2021

2021 bridal trends will be less about fashion and go one of three ways.  Brides will be focused on creating time honoured memories with tradition and things that matter paying a big part.  Leading Bespoke Wedding dress Designer & Bridal Couturier Phillipa Lepley, predicts a surge in business for British bridal designers with a ‘return to ageless styles’.

Phillipa Lepley is also quoted as saying that “Brides will opt for more classic and timeless wedding dresses, prioritizing the best of the best quality”.

The momentous shift in values  is a great time for brides who want also feel that they want ‘something different’.  Perhaps from the perspective of choosing a design that is can be worn after the wedding day itself or, choosing a dress that is purposefully the opposite of the traditional white dress.

COLOUR

Colour will continue to play a key part of bridal trends for years to come which – in my humble  opinion as a wedding dress designer – is that brides with paler skin tones, can now experiment with alternatives shades such as blush, nude, cappuccino and buff stone shades, as a way of injecting softer hues that are flattering and warmer  against their skin. Personally, I love playing with shades particularly layering shades against each other when using sheer fabrics such as embroiders laces, organza, tulles and chiffons. Because of how it changes significantly that character of the dress and provides a design that is totally unique for its wearer.

Last season we began to see hints of Victorian influences coming through with pretty ‘Downton Abbey’ style sleeves, romantic high collared necklines and dresses with a overall reduced silhouette.

FUSS FREE HAIR

.

Following in the footsteps of Megan Markle the trend for a ‘less is more’ approach will continue for a few more seasons.  Again, laid back can still be classy if  the half up half down up-do just isn’t you,  providing natural, softer and simpler styling that does away with the fuss.

However,  for the brides who desperate to  escape the monotomy loungewear lifestyle associated with ‘working from home’, we predict a return to sparkly, glamorous hair accessories with chandelier earrings and statement necklaces.

SUSTAINABILITY

.

Of the most  positive outcomes to emerge from lock down, is growing awareness of how our choices today affect our future.  From exploring ways to reduce the environmental and ethical impact of their wedding, by  many couples will be considering ways in which they can make a difference by maximizing the use of products .

.

Worth a mention also, is Princess Eugenie’s plans to have a plastic- free wedding, which, although  this may sound extreme it just requires a little inventive thinking to make your wedding sustainable; from using wedding stationery made from recycled paper to finding a catering company that sources ethical, local and organic produce.

.

If the last three month has taught us anything.  It is that it is OK to be who we are as people by mindfully choosing to embrace our personality and to reclaim ownership of our personal and individual style with clarity.   VOQUE magazine are backing this trend by stating that “the biggest wedding trend for 2020 is individuality”…” which thankfully means brides are no longer pigeon-holed in either the ‘traditional’ or ‘boho’ category, and  guests no longer endure a [series] summer of déjà vu identikit weddings (are we really still tossing bouquets?)”

The saying that ‘Love is Not Cancelled’ should be applied to our respective and personal unique style, allowing our ‘true stories’ to be revealed and celebrated in a way that is entirely bespoke and sums up the way in which we want to live our lives.

.

As a bespoke wedding dress designer, my goal is to educate brides that a bespoke bridal gown isn’t necessarily more expensive than a shop bought mass produced gown.  And the benefits of having a wedding dress that is uniquely designed  and that fits with perfection should be top of the agenda of luxury items to have.

.

I have always advocated for women to be true to themselves and to educate themselves more about the purchases they make.  The wedding day  should represent both the identity and style of both couples and I truly believe that in order to have a ‘stand out from the crowd’ wedding, then a bespoke designed wedding dress that is brimming with personality, style and endless memories, should be a must have.  I am personally excited that brides are waking up and welcoming their heightened knowledge  and using the information to make informed decisions.
